The Rule of St. Benedict
"Insights Into the Art of Living"
Silence
Remember the great value of silence.
Each day there must be time for silence,
even in our prayers and meditation.
There must be time within which we
neither speak nor listen,
but simply are.

Consider the silence of a living tree;
it neither speaks nor hears.
Out of the uncounted aeons,
inexorable, ever-changing forces have erected it,
to a purpose beyond our understanding.
It needs no words,
yet its presence
is no less actual than ours.

Consider the value of silence in community.
Our ability to listen should be our gift
to those around us.
Too much talk is sign of self-centeredness
and insecurity.

If you hear yourself talking excessively,
take care.

Church DNA
Lang Celebrates Communion
Much has been written about the importance of good organizational DNA.  Whether it be business, schools or churches - organizational experts agree that it's vital that at the core of the enterprise exists the good principles or DNA that anchors the organizational purpose.  It has been said that without these good principles an organization may grow but will, like a vine planted in poor soil, become fruitless and ultimately wither.

In recent years organizational scientists have concluded that merely having good organizational DNA is not sufficient for success.  They say good DNA, like a seed, needs constant care and cultivation such that what the organization is built upon is brought into being by the life of the community.

Simply, good organizational DNA is built not only on good life giving principles at the core of the enterprise but on the individuals who "connect" with these principles and claim them for their own.

At Saint Benedict's I hope that we will always actively strive to make a "connection" with the the good organizational DNA - Christ Jesus, in which we are built.  In order to help our parishioners make this "connection" many of our non-worship events are built around not only Christian fellowship but mission and outreach.

I hope that you will "connect" with these non-worship events, especially some of the ones that are featured in this e-newsletter.  In Romans 8 Paul says the Spirit of Christ will be present in a community of Faith that "connects" with Christ.  "Connecting" is Paul's key word for good church DNA.

Peace,

Growers & Builders - St. B's Children's Group Kick-Offs
This past week, we held kick-offs for St. B's new Children's Groups: God's Growers (ages 4 & under, led by Stephanie Park) and God's Builders (ages 5 - 9, led by Genia Hachenberg).

God's GrowersThe Growers met for a play date at a park on Atlanta Rd. We had a total of 15 children, along with their parents, who played together for a couple of hours. Fun and fellowship were had by all!!  Pictures of the Growers are at our Web site.

Pumpkin PaloozaGod's Builders gathered together for the Pumpkin Palooza to paint pumpkins for the children at Scottish Rite Hospital. Dressed in their halloween costumes and assisted by several members of the St. B's Youth Group, they painted well over 40 pumpkins. A definite highlight was the appearance of Austin the Gorilla and his friend Oscar the Wolfman. Several pictures of the Builders can be found here.
