The Rule of St. Benedict
"Insights Into the Art of Living"
Self-Forgetfulness

Our ultimate goal is this: to forget ourselves.
To be satisfied in life
we must transcend the desire for satisfaction.
We must cast of our own appetites.
We must free ourselves from our own self-centeredness.
In order to accomplish this, we must practice obedience.

The obedient servant subordinates his or her own will to another.
It is in the servant's long-term interest to do so.

Likewise, if we are to become strong enough to emancipate ourselves from the tyranny of our own cravings
we must train our constitutions by the continuous exercise of obedience to other persons and to the dictates of our circumstances.

We must always be prepared to cast aside our own agendas whenever we have the opportunity to be of service to another. And when we act for another's interests we must do so cheerfully, without thought of recognition or reward. Our greatest compensation will occur when compensation is not sought.

The Praying Lady
Lang Celebrates Communion
Hopefully, you have seen our invitation to our upcoming Community Day, introduced by the "Praying Lady." Her reverent posture praying the Lord's Prayer is a fitting symbol of the rich liturgical tradition of the Episcopal Church. I can think of no better symbol to accompany our invitation to St. Benedict's Community Day, October 2, 2007, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel (more details).

Community Day is an important day in our mission toward becoming a worshiping community. This event is for our founders, friends, partners, Episcopalians from other churches and those interested in the community to learn about St. Benedict's vision and plans. We need your support and attendance. It is an excellent opportunity to meet Bishop Alexander and his staff and to join us for fellowship and refreshments!

Peace,
