Build Our Cross
St. Benedict's has commissioned Staffan Svenson, an award-winning architect and partner in Dencity Design, to develop a cross to use during worship and to hang in our office. The cross will be a three-dimensional version of the cross used on our letterhead, Web site, and this newsletter.

Staffan has provided two designs for review. Please go to our Web site and take a look.
There is also an opportunity for you to give us your opinion, which will be posted for others to read (your name will not be listed with your comments). Thanks for your help in Building Christ's Church.
Today's Prayer
Prayer for the Gifts to Seek God and Live in Him

Father, in your goodness grant me the intellect to comprehend you, the perception to discern you, and the reason to appreciate you.

In your kindness endow me with the diligence to look for you, the wisdom to discover you, and the spirit to apprehend you.

In your graciousness bestow on me a heart to contemplate you, ears to hear you, eyes to see you, and a tongue to speak of you.

In your mercy confer on me a conversation pleasing to you, the patience to wait for you, and the perseverance to long for you.

Grant me a perfect end - your holy presence. Amen.

Welcome to Grow In Faith!
Lang Celebrates CommunionAs the new Vicar of St. Benedict's Episcopal Church, I want to welcome you to Grow In Faith, our monthly e-newsletter intended to reflect and support the mission of St. Benedict's Episcopal Church:

The mission of St. Benedict's Episcopal Church is to come together as a community to grow in faith and share Christ's love with an ever-changing world.

Our purpose in establishing St. Benedict's is to create a vibrant community of worshipers who share a common goal of forging a closer relationship with Jesus Christ.  As a reflection of our namesake, St. Benedict, we are founded on a belief in

  • the traditional liturgy of the church coupled with
  • the need to develop contemporary relationships that recognize the real-world challenges inherent in today's society.
In upcoming issues of Grow In Faith, we will present more information about St. Benedict's growth, our core beliefs, guest contributions, the people of St. Benedict's, and issues relevant to our ever-changing world and our relationship with Jesus Christ.

If you know of anyone who may be interested in building St. Benedict's, please use the "Forward Email" link at the bottom of this email.

Courtney VaughnBuilding a new church takes a lot of work, many diverse skills, and a commitment to bringing people into a community of Jesus Christ. St. Benedict's is fortunate that some dedicated people have volunteered to come Build Christ's Church!

Courtney Vaughn
Courtney assists Jonathan Jones (Director of Congregational Development) and Patty Jones (Parish Secretary) in building Saint Benedict's new parishioner database. Courtney, previously with the Cathedral of Saint Philip had similar responsibilities and is very experienced in congregational development. Courtney is a native of "New Vinings" and the Smyrna area. As a child her family were members of Saint Jude's Episcopal Church in north Smyrna and her grandfather was Mayor of Smyrna. Courtney's brother is a priest in the Episcopal Church and her years of being an Episcopalian and a native in the "New Vinings" area is a God send!

You can contact Courtney at 678-279-4300 or via her email at Courtney@MySaintB.org.

Who Is St. Benedict?
St. Benedict Benedict of Nursia (480-547) was Abbott of Monte Cassino, a monastery located midway between Rome and Naples and is generally accounted as the father of western monasticism. Benedict was born wealthy to a Roman Nobleman in Nursia and later educated in Rome. While in Rome he was transformed by the breakdown of western civilization and felt the need to withdraw to monastic seclusion. He founded many monasteries and it was in Monte Cassino that St. Benedict developed the roots of the monastic system that would later be named "the Rule of Saint Benedict" and serve as the basis for monasticism in the Roman Catholic Church.

Building Christ's Church - Our Progress
St. Benedict's CrossIn 2006, The Rt. Rev. J. Neil Alexander, Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, decided to plant a church in the Vinings area of Atlanta. He then tapped The Rev. Lang Lowrey, at the time Associate Rector of St. Anne's, to head this effort and appointed him Vicar (otherwise known as the Vicar of Vinings).

Since then St. Benedict's has made significant progress. We have:
  • Moved into dedicated office space near I-285 and I-75 (go to our Web site for directions),
  • Established a small, dedicated staff focused on building St. Benedict's (meet them here),
  • Recruited several key volunteers,
  • Identified a possible location for St. Benedict's.
Obviously, we have a great amount of work ahead of us and could use your help. If you are interested in helping to Build Christ's Church in New Vinings, GA, please contact Patty, our Parish Secretary, via email or at 678-279-4302. Thank you.
