The Rule of St. Benedict
"Insights Into the Art of Living"
Leadership

A fit leader must attune to the variations in persons.
A gentle person may be led by persuasion, while the rebellious by more exacting means.

The true leader should never value things above the value of attitude. The worth of right perspective is beyond measure.

Those who chose to follow bear the responsibility for their choice of leaders.

When any significant action is to take place, or any important decision is to be made, counsel should be taken in all cases where it is possible to do so. Our actions always affect others, and the persons affected should participate in determinations that influence them.

We each see the world from divergent viewpoints, and we are equal participants in the cosmic game. For these reasons it is both efficient and right that consultation occur in all matters of substance.

Those who are consulted should give their insights without argument, and should accept the ultimate decision with good grace when it diverges from their point of view.

Once the advice of those involved has been obtained, the person whose responsibility it is to choose a course of action should take counsel alone, and then act as is best in the circumstances. Frequently, all that can be done is to choose from several less than optimum alternatives. In those cases we must accept the limitations imposed on us as the natural result of things as they are, and avoid the paralysis that comes from wishing for different circumstances.

In all things be governed by the sense, not the letter, of right principles.

"Are We There Yet?"
Lang Celebrates Communion
On our family's summer vacation I heard these famous words frequently coming from each of our four children. These words reminded me that I used to drive my parents crazy with the same question. Throughout my business years this question was a hallmark of my career. Even now, as "Vicar of Vinings," I often wonder when our St. B's mission will reach our goal of worshiping in our own church.

Yet, thanks be to God, I'm beginning to understand more of what it means to find new life in Christ (Ephesians 2: 1-22). I am learning that life is not meant to be all about goals (or even the destination) but about the journey and every precious step we take along the way. For this reason, I am so happy to report that "No, we aren't there yet." I am pleased to report, however, that if Founders Day was an example of the first precious step in our journey, then we all can take great joy because, in words of my son Austin, it was simply "awesome" (see below). It was heartwarming to see so many come together in the name of Christ to take this first step on our journey.

Now we must focus our attention on the next step in our journey: Community Day on October 2, 2007 (again, see below). This is a very important step in our mission when St. Benedict's will be introduced to the community. Even though it is only a second step, it is important because it will mark a "step change" (see our printed newsletter of August 17) when our friends and founders must take up the mantle, clearing our way to commence Sunday worship in the following 90 days. With your attendance we can successfully take this important next step.

To assist our friends and founders in helping us take the next step, we have set aside an information event on Monday, September 10 (again, see below). This will be an informal discussion that will give you the information as to how you can help.

We realize that this follows closely on the heels of Founders Day and on the toes of our outing to MUST Ministries (see column at left).  But come by the office if it's convenient. If you can't , we'll try to find another way to get you this important information. For in Christ we are not merely "sojourners" wondering "are we there yet?" We are "made alive" by the journey.

Peace,

Founders Day Celebration - Simply Awesome!!!
Simply Awesome!!!St. B's Founders Day
These are the best words to describe our Founders Day Celebration. More than 100 attended!! And if a 74 degree temperature and a steady breeze (aka, The Holy Spirit) weren't a testimony to the blessing of the day, what other sign could we hope to see (except for the Braves to have won, of course)?

A special thanks to all who made this day heavenly, especially Lynn & Mitch Strickland, Courtney and Alice Vaughn, Hollis Houk, Patty Jones, Ron Reagan, Laura Law, Pam Adams, Katie Demer, The Bishop & Canons, and many others, not the least of which were our hosts Jonathan, Margaret, and Allison Jones. Thanks be to God!

Many of the photos from this great day are now up on our Web site. Click here to view them all.

  Braves Welcome

We are working on the format, some suggestions are a scripture verse, spiritual journey story, or food for the soul type story with each submission, and/or arranged seasonally (by church seasons) ie. for Advent appetizers.

Do you have a favorite recipe you'd like to contribute?  Would you like to help compile to cookbook? Please contact Courtney by email or at (678) 279-4300.

(By the way, men can also submit their favorite recipes as well!  Do we have some grillmasters out there?)
