New Orleans Hospitality at the May Newcomer Gathering

B and Pete DeBuy's once again showed their New Orleans Hospitality for the Newcomers on May 18th.  Everyone enjoyed the menu of Popeye's Chicken and B's Red Beans and Rice.  I also heard several people raving about the yummy Banana Pudding.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm...  Mother's Enjoyed a Scrumptous Breakfast!

The votes are in and it's a landslide!!!  Chris Talley's Salmon Frittata was a huge hit for the Mother's Day breakfast served on May 11th.  In fact, there are several vocal folks who insist that it should become a new tradition at St. Benedict's.  Click here to see some special people who were able to FINALLY sit down and have a leisurely breakfast. 





 

Pentecost and Baptisms on May 11th

Pentecost at St. BenedictsWe were seeing plenty of red on Pentecost.  Congregants wore red and we got to use our beautiful new altar linens.  One of the highlights of the day was our baptisms of West Michael Krasner and Robert Allen Hanahan.  Click here to see the pictures.

 

 

 


Young Adult Community (YAC) Meets for Mojitos and Mosquitos

 

The Young Adult Community had it's inagural meeting on May 4th at the home of Lang and Julie Lowery.  The weather was perfect, the mosquitos didn't show up and a good time was had by all.  The next YAC meeting is tenatively scheduled for the end of summer.  If you are interested in attending, please contact Courtney Vaughn to provide her with your contact information.  Click here to see the photo album.


St. Benedict's Spirit Shines Through The Rain at The Smyrna Jonquil Festival

Despite the rain, St. Benedicts once again, made it's presence known at the Smyrna Jonquil Festival at the Village Green in Smyrna on April 26.  Unfortunately, we were rained out on Sunday. Never fear... once again we provided an opportunity to color lunch bags for MUST Ministries' Summer Lunch program and we raised money for Heifer International to go toward trees for gifts of trees to stop erosion and to provide shade for flocks.  Click here to see the photos.


Green Eggs and Ham were Just the Start of a Great Earth Day Sunday

Thanks to the Green Team for hosting a great breakfast, giving us a chance to recycle our used batteries, and helping us learn about using compact florescent lights.  $12 was raised through the Rent-A-Mug initiative where the money raised will be used for greening up and landscaping the new church property.

St. B's Youth Group Tree Climbing Event!
On Sunday, April 13th, St. B's youth group got a birds eye view of the world!  With safety gear strapped on, they ventured high into the trees to look at things from a different perspective.  Everyone had a great time. and we got to meet Big Lou the Emu!  (take a look at our photo album)


 

Sunday, March 30, 2008, an exciting day at St. B's!  
On March 30th, St. Benedict's celebrated our first baptisms and welcomed four new members into the body of Christ!   Our youth also hosted their first spaghetti supper fundraiser that evening to raise funds for their 2009 ski trip!  (click here for photo album)
 


 
Alleluia! Christ is risen!
Sunday, March 23rd was a joyous day at St. Benedict's as we celebrated the risen Lord.  The morning began with an Easter Brunch Extravaganza. Thanks be to God for the abundance of food we shared with one another, and thanks to the hands that prepared it!  The Easter Bunny paid a visit and led the way to the Easter egg hunt.  The cool temps moved us indoors and as our pictures show we got creative, the older children hunted for eggs on "Rabbit Hill" (aka the bleachers) while the younger children found their eggs in "Bunny Cove".  Our 10:30 service was a Festival Choral Eucharist with brass and timpani, with special guest the Rev. Canon Alicia Schuster-Weltner celebrating and the Rev. Lang Lowrey preaching. Other highlights of the morning included the flowering of the cross and the procession of the children with their Alleluia banners.  (click here for our photo album)


St. B's Women's Group Gets Crafty!
On Tuesday, March 18th, St. Benedict's Women's Group enjoyed a "girl's night in" at the home of Betsy Shuford (Thank you, Betsy!).  In preparation for St. B's upcoming baptisms on March 30th, the Women's Group made baptismal banners.  Also, in honor of all the recent babies that have joined St. B's church family, we had a "baby shower" for MUST Ministries. Thank you to everyone for bringing in all the baby wipes and diapers, MUST was thrilled!  As always there was good food and fellowship!  (check out the photo album)

In additon to the regular meeting of the Women's Group this month, there was a bonus outing downtown on Thursday, March 13th, to see Menopause the Musical.  The women had a blast and are already planning the next theatrical field trip!


Palm Sunday Butterfly Event!

St. B's Women's Group Goes Bowling!

On Tuesday, February 18th, St. B's Women's Group enjoyed a "girl's night out" at Ten Pin Alley, the new upscale bowling alley at Atlantic Station!  Check out our photo album to see all the fun.  We're already planning to take to the lanes again this summer! 


St. B's Youth Go Ice Skating!
On Sunday, February 17th, the youth of St. B's along with the youth advisors took to the ice!  It was a great afternoon!  First everyone pitched in and helped breakdown our worship space at Campbell, then we ate lunch at Moe's before heading to the rink.

St. B's Youth Super Bowl Party
On Sunday, February 3rd, the youth of St. B's gathered at the Demer's home (Thank you Dave, Katie, Inga, & Marita!) to watch the Super Bowl!  This was the final event on a very busy day for our youth.  They arrived at church bright and early to prepare a "Shrove Sunday" pancake breakfast for everyone and they collected non-perishables and clothing for MUST Ministrires as part of the "Souper Bowl of Caring"!  The MUST bin was overflowing with donations! 


St. B's Women's Group
On Tuesday, January 15th, the St. B's Women's Group gathered at Robin & Mary's home (Thank you Robin & Mary!) for a discussion of the book Mary and Her Miracle:  The Christmas Story Retold with special guest (via phone) the author, the Rev. St. B's Dress Rehearsal
On Sunday, January 6th, volunteers gathered at Campbell Middle School to hold a rehearsal in preparation for the inaugural worship service on January 13, 2008. (for a sneak peek click here)

On Tuesday, December 18th the women of St. B's gathered at the home of Perri Daugette (Thank you, Perri!) for an evening of fellowship and fun in the spirit of the holiday season, including a livley ornament swap! (click here for photo album)


St. B's Youth Group Progressive Dinner!
On Sunday, December 9th St. B's youth group met at the DiGiorgio's home for a lasagna dinner, before traveling downtown to Centennial Park for ice skating!  Of course the record high temp that day prevented us from skating but as you can see from the pictures it didn't dampen our spirits!  From the park we traveled to the McGrew's home for ice cream sundeas and a gift exchange! Thank you to the DiGiorgio's and McGrew's for opening up their homes to 29 youth!  (click here for photo album) 


St. B's Children's Christmas Party!
On Saturday, December 8th the children of St. B's celebrated the season with crafts, lunch, Christmas carols, & storytelling!  The children donated toys for MUST Ministries Christmas Toy Shop and there was even a visit from one of Santa's helpers, Austin the elf!  (click here to view photo album)

God's Builders Atop Kennesaw Mountain!
On Saturday, November 17th, God's Builders (children ages 5-9) enjoyed the beautiful fall weather by hiking up Kennesaw Mountain!  After the exhilirating hike we rested in the shade and enjoyed a picnic lunch.   To celebrate the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday we collected non-perishable food items for MUSTMinistires!  (click here to view photo album)

God's Growers Had A Jumping Good Time at KangaZoom!
On Saturday, November 10th, God's Growers (children ages 4 & younger) met at KangaZoom on Atlanta Rd.  Everyone had a great time hopping off energy and getting their parents leaping (and sliding!). (click here to view photo album)

St. B's Youth at the Movies
On Sunday, November 4th St. B's youth met at Parkway Pointe movie theaters to see the new movie"Bee Movie".  The youth were asked to bring a toy with them, as their admission cost, for MUST Ministries Christmas Toy Shop.  We had a great turn out and collected a box full of toys for MUST!


St. B's at the Homeless Requiem
On Thursday, November 1st St. B's youth helped serve a meal to the 750+ homeless guests at the Homeless Requiem at the Cathedral of St. Philip.  Thank you to the youth and parents who helped out!  (click here for photo album)


St. B's Youth Group at Six Flags October 28th
The youth of St. B's enjoyed thrills & chills at Six Flags Fright Fest on Sunday, October 28th. It was an action packed day of fun on the Cyclone, Batman, Superman, Mindbender, Scorcher, & Goliath! As if all of those coasters aren't enough to make your hair stand on end, there were monsters, ghouls, & zombies rooming the park just waiting to surprise unsuspecting youth group members!!!!

St. B's 1st Annual Pumpkin Palooza
On Sunday, October 14, "God's Builders" (our 5 - 9 year olds) celebrated the fall season at Pumpkin Palooza.  We gathered at the Smyrna Welcome Center and painted miniature pumpkins for the children at Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital.  St. B’s youth helped out and painted a pumpkin of their own (can you guess who their pumpkin looks like?)  click here for photo album


St. B's  1st "God's Growers" Event
On Saturday, October 13, "God's Growers" (the official name of our children's ministry for ages 4 and under) met for a play date in the park.  Fun was had by all! 

St. Benedict's Community Day October 2, 2007
On Tuesday, October 2, more than 167 attendees (friends, founders, and family) turned out to hear all about St. Benedict's as we introduced ourselves to the Cobb County community. For more details, to see the Community Day presentation, or to view St. Benedict's slide show click here. 


St. Benedict's Attends New Diocesan Institute of Ministry and Theological Education
On September 29 St. Benedict's joined with other Atlanta area Episcopalians to "Imagine the World that Scripture Imagines". 

They participated in lectures, break-out discussion groups, lunch & a Q&A with featured guest Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson, renowned New Testament professor at Candler School of Theology at Emory.


St. B's Youth Group Paintball Event September 30th
It was the Pharisees (adults) vs. the Sadducess (youth) at Paintball Atlanta on September 30th.  The result was the youth's victory over the adults.  So it was actually the adults who were "sad -u-see! (click here for photo album)


St. Benedict's Women's Group
On September 18th, we gathered at Atkins Park in Smyrna's Market Village for dinner and fellowship.  We had a wonderful evening and were thrilled to see all the new faces there as well!  We took this opportunity to plan for upcoming events as well as to introduce the chairs of a few of St. B's newly formed guilds & committees.


St. B's Tours MUST Ministries Marietta
On Sunday, September 16th, a group from St. B's gathered at the MUST Ministries location in Marietta to tour the facilities that provide food, shelter, clothing, job assistance & education, and medical care to people in need in Cobb County.  We would especially like to thank the Rev. Andy Peabody, Director of Programs, for leading us on the tour and for providing us with information about the services MUST provides as well as the ways in which St. B's can be involved!


Simply Awesome!!!
These are the best words to describe our Founders Day Celebration. More than 100 attended!! And if a 74 degree temperature and a steady breeze (aka, The Holy Spirit) weren't a testimony to the blessing of the day, what other sign could we hope to see (except for the Braves to have won, of course)?

A special thanks to all who made this day heavenly, especially Lynn & Mitch Strickland, Courtney and Alice Vaughn, Hollis Houk, Patty Jones, Ron Reagan, Laura Law, Pam Adams, Katie Demer, The Bishop & Canons, and many others, not the least of which were our hosts Jonathan, Margaret, and Allison Jones. Thanks be to God!

St. B's Youth Group Kick Off August 26th
On Sunday, August 26th, the St. B's youth group kicked off the year ahead with an "Event of Biblical Proportions".  We met in downtown Smyrna for lunch at Moe's"es", went on a scaveneger hunt with Jesus, and experienced "Noah's Flood".  (click here for photo album)

St. B's Youth Community Service Event July 30
Thank you to the 25 youth and adults who gathered at St. Benedict's offices on July 30th to make 500 sandwiches for MUST Ministries Summer Lunch Program!  In addition to making the PB&J sandwiches, we stuffed 500 lunch bags with raisins, pretzels, and juice boxes, ate some pizza and listened to music.  (click here for photo album) 


"Back to Hogwart's" & Harry Potter
On July 11th the St. B's youth group went to see the new movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and collected school supplies for MUST Ministries.  Thank you to everyone for your generous donations to the kids at MUST!

St. Benedict's Women's Group On July 10th, we gathered at Art from the Heart in downtown Smyrna (A special thank you to Art from the Heart for hosting our group).  We enjoyed fellowship and painting pottery as we discussed Grace Eventually.  Thank you to our special guest, The Rev. "Unday Sunday" & Evan Almighty

St. B's first annual "Unday Sunday" was a great success!  On June 24th youth & the young at heart went to see the new movie Evan Almighty and collected new underwear for MUST Ministries.  Thank you to everyone who participated in "Unday Sunday", we collected 300 pairs of underwear and 72 pairs of socks for the kids at MUST!


St. Benedict's Youth Community Service Event
On June 18th, 12 youth gathered at St. Benedict's offices to make sandwiches for MUST Ministries Summer Lunch Program.  We made 500 sandwiches, stuffed 500 lunch bags with bananas, pretzels, and juice boxes, ate some pizza and watched a movie! (click here for photo album)


St. Benedict's Women's Group On June 7th, 18 women gathered at the home of Gail Sickling (Thank you, Gail!) for tapas, sangria, and a discussion of The Faith Club.  We enjoyed fellowship and it was nice to see all of the new faces there as well!  Thank you to our special guest, Mother Mary Erickson from St. Martin in the Fields, for leading our discussion.  Our next gathering will be July 10th.  (click here for photo album) 


St. Benedict's First Youth Gathering
On May 20th, St. B's held its first Youth Gathering at the Smyrna Community Center. 14 youth enjoyed the afternoon of tie dyeing t-shirts, making (and using) marshmallow launchers, eating gelato (aka ice cream), and playing frisbee & football.  Thank you to our wonderful volunteers!
