Extended Family:
Community-Based Outreach to Families of Prisoners
St. Benedict's is proud to support the formation of a new branch of Extended Family, a non-profit, community-based outreach program for families of prisoners in the Metro Atlanta Area.
Extended Family understands that when a person is incarcerated, they always leave behind innocent spouses, children, parents and loved ones with a significant amount of shame, fear, and embarrassment. Not to mention the other more tangible effects of insufficient family income, loss of insurance benefits, burdensome debt, a rapid transition to single parenting, and considerable other severe stressors. Extended Family wants others to know that the family member does not have to 'do time' for the inmate. Instead, they exist to offer help and to inspire hope that life will once again be happy.
Extended Family meetings are designed to allow family members an opportunity to share their experiences, process their feelings and fears, and to ask questions. However, there is no requirement for active participation. You may simply attend and listen to other members.
Extended Family does not distribute funds or act as a marital, legal or personal counseling center. However, meetings are often filled with education on special programs and resources that can be of assistance to the participants. The one thing that a person will always find at an Extended Family meeting is someone who says "I understand" --- and they really do.
Extended Family meetings are held at the St. Benedict's Offices on the First Monday of the month.
