Academics at St. Benedict's Episcopal Day School

Our curriculum is designed with the individual child in mind. At its core, our philosophy of education is that children learn through interaction and exploration.  The Pre-K curriculum includes:

  • Handwriting without Tears - using spacial blocks to create more recognition of the shapes behind letter formation moving into a workbook focused program as they develop stronger fine motor/pencil grip skills.

  • Sounds and Symbols - this program introduces phonemic awareness through character stories and pictoral aids.

  • An in-house designed Spanish program- Each of our rooms have native Spanish speakers working with the children throughout the day in addition to a sit down Spanish work time.   Vocabulary development is done in 2 parts; alphabetically and weekly themes that present vocabulary and words within a context.    Because the children hear the language spoken conversationally throughout the day they also begin picking up grammatical structure in the natural course of their language.

  • Mathematics - at the youngest level this is an "opportunity" based system to discover the relationship between numbers and the world around them!  Once a child has conquerd fundamental numeric relationships, we move into additional concepts such as sorting/classification/sequencing. *** at the older classrooms students move into the Everyday Math Curriculum which uses a spiraling concept program and continues through elementary.

Want to See the Curriculum in Action?

If you would like to come and see our how our curriculum works, we invite yout come tour our S. Cobb Drive Location (it will most closely resemble the classroom sets of the St. Benedict's location). We feel that it is valuable for parents to see the classrooms in action - and we love to show off our brilliant students! Tours are done between 9:30 & 11:00 daily by appointment so that we can insure that we have the staffing to conduct them.

To make and appointment you can call Janet Rau at 770-805-0068 or email her at janet@viningsacademy.com.
